How do I research my ancestor's regimental colors?
First place I would look would be with the State Historical Society from the state in which his regiment came. They will be able to direct you in most cases. Secondly, if you hit a dead end there, check to see if there is a reenactment unit of that name. They may have been able to dig up some information and may have a flag already created for their use. You will be surprised at how many flags are actually catalogued and that have images or artistic recreations done. Can I order a flag with grommets to fly from a flagpole? Yes. It will be a nylon flag and without fringe. Write for an estimate. How long will my flag last? Your flag has the potential to last for a very long time if cared for properly. The most common problems with silk is snagging or tearing of the cloth and static display in direct sunlight over a long time will fade color and weaken fabric. The paint will wear very slightly over time if in field use and this adds some patina to the flag. How do I care for my flag? Keep it clean and never roll it up and store it wet. Always allow it to dry completely before storing it in wrapped around the staff. The flag should be stored on the staff when not in use by rolling it on the staff. Storing it "unrolled" could lead to snagging or damage over time if not careful. If your flag becomes dirty, it can be washed like any silk fabric. The paint has been heat set and will withstand this cleaning just fine. Also, do not store your flag long term in direct sunlight. Static displays of fabric of any type should always have indirect sunlight or artificial light preferrably. Colors fade and fabric weakens with UV rays. If your flag needs repair we can provide that service. Just contact us for an estimate. |
