REGIMENTAL COLORS

What color thread was originally used?
The flag makers during the time of the Civil War used any color they had. If you look at original examples, you will find red, black, white, grey, blue.. etc.. etc... It doesn't seem to matter although some took great pains to match colors. Most did not. We like using the neutral colors. Gray and light brown are good natural colors and don't accentuate the stitching as much. It is just our preference.

Can you make other flags?
Yes, we will always look at custom requests. Just ask.

Were all Civil War flags made of silk?
No. Even during the Civil War, flags were made of just about any fabric available. Cotton, wool and silk were all used. At the onset of the Civil War, towns sending a company of infantry off to join a regiment would often send a home made color with them. These varied as to size, material and design. Some interesting examples still survive. Many were embroidered and much smaller than regulation. Regulations standardized the Union flags used by each branch of the army in 1861.

Will nylon look like silk?
From a distance, it will,  but not up close. The feel is different and certainly the way the flag takes the breeze is different. Silk tends to be very "live" in its reaction to any air movement.
